Diagnostic hysteroscopy involves inserting a hysteroscope, a thin optical instrument, through the cervix to directly visualize the inside of the uterine cavity. It allows for the detection of abnormalities such as polyps, fibroids or adhesions, which aren’t always visible on ultrasound.
What Is Diagnostic Hysteroscopy?
When Is It Indicated?
-
Abnormal uterine bleeding, outside of or during menstruation
-
Menstrual cycle irregularities
-
Fertility or infertility work-up
-
Suspected polyp or fibroid on ultrasound
-
Preliminary work-up before certain fertility treatments (assisted reproduction)
How the Examination Works
-
The examination is performed in-office, without general anesthesia in most cases.
-
The hysteroscope is gently inserted through the natural passageway, allowing direct visualization of the uterine cavity on a screen.
-
The examination usually takes just a few minutes.
What Can Hysteroscopy Detect?
-
Uterine Polyps
Benign growths of the uterine lining.
-
Fibroids
Benign tumors of the uterine muscle that can protrude into the cavity.
-
Adhesions
Scar tissue inside the uterine cavity, which can interfere with embryo implantation.
After the Examination
Diagnostic hysteroscopy is generally well tolerated, with the possibility of mild bleeding or cramping in the hours following the examination. Results are discussed directly with the patient, and guide any further care if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
The examination may cause some discomfort or cramping, which is generally well tolerated; intensity varies from patient to patient.
In most cases, the examination is performed without anesthesia, in-office; anesthesia may be offered in certain specific situations.
Diagnostic hysteroscopy only allows examination and visualization of the uterine cavity; if an abnormality requires treatment (removal of a polyp, for example), operative hysteroscopy, performed at a later stage, may be offered.
Generally during the first half of the cycle, outside of menstruation; the optimal timing is confirmed when scheduling the appointment.
